Instructor Bio
This lecture series on public health ethics was written and delivered
by James C. Thomas, MPH, PhD, an Associate Professor of Epidemiology
in the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill. He is also the Director of the Program
in Public Health Ethics at UNC.
Dr. Thomas has worked both as a public health practitioner and
academic epidemiologist. As a practitioner, he has worked both
internationally (including two years in the Congo and one year
in Kenya) and domestically (three years with the Los Angeles County
Health Department). He has taught epidemiology at UNC since 1989.
His principal area of research is community characteristics affecting
the distribution of sexually transmitted diseases.
Dr. Thomas studied ethics at Fuller Theological Seminary. He
was one of the principal authors of the Public
Health Code of Ethics, and has subsequently led an effort
to identify core competencies and skills in public health ethics.
